AMADA WELD TECH advises on challenges of joining applications in electrical vehicle manufacturing

AMADA WELD TECH’s own specialist Dr Marcin Alexy addressed the main challenges of joining applications in electrical vehicle manufacturing at the International Welding Conference in Poland and Slovakia. At this conference welding specialists gathered to discuss new opportunities in welding engineering.

Electrical power to reduce traffic emission

Electric vehicles are becoming standard on the road today. Electro mobility is the key factor to reduce the worldwide direct emissions of the traffic. Private automobiles, transportation trucks, bikes, motorcycles, scooters and more, all can be driven by electrical power provided by batteries.

Connected battery cells

The battery pack used in electric vehicles consists of a large number of individual mechanically and electrically connected battery cells. The creation of the required mechanical and electrical joints includes a number of challenges.

Dissimilar metals and so many more challenges

The main challenges are: welding of dissimilar metals, the need to join thick conductive and highly reflective tab materials, such as cooper and aluminium and their alloys, requirement of high speed positioning to enable high productivity, necessity to deal with significant variability in cell height as well as the requirement to ensure full monitoring of the welding and joining process.

For example different metals have different melting temperatures, different expansion coefficients, and sometimes incompatible chemistries. For instance, aluminium melts at 660° C that means fully 840° C lower than stainless steels’ 1500° C melting temperature. Just to name a few of the challenges that you can face when manufacturing applications for electrical vehicles.

Range of joining technology options

Different joining methods can solve the above-mentioned joining challenges that exist during battery pack manufacturing. At AMADA WELD TECH, we always consider several joining technology options including resistance, laser and micro TIG (pulsed arc) welding.

At AMADA WELD TECH, we will be happy to advise you on the suitability as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each technological solution for your manufacturing challenge. Contact us to find your best solution.
